A Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) can be used to confirm your:
- Personality
- Right to Study
- rights to any public services or benefits you are entitled to
You can’t use your BRP to confirm your right to work or rent a home. For this you will need to confirm your right to work or rent online.
You will usually get BRP if:
- Get a Global Talent Visa
- Extend your visa for more than 6 months
- Apply for permanent residence in the UK
- Transfer the visa to a new passport
- Apply for certain travel documents of the Ministry of Internal Affairs
You do not need to submit a separate application to the BRP.
All new BRP expires on December 31, 2024.If you have a residence permit in the UK longer than this period, you will switch to using “eVisa” before your BRP expires.
BRPs differ from Biometric Residence Cards (BRCs). BRCs are also referred to as “UK Resident Cards”. You may have one if you are in the UK as a family member of someone from the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein. On BRC is written “residence card”.
When you can’t get BRP
You cannot obtain a BRP if you use the UK Immigration: ID Check app to verify your identity when applying for a stay in the UK.
If you apply to the BRP, you will not get it.
What is stated on your BRP
Your BRP will include:
- Your name, date and place of birth
- your fingerprints and face photos (this is your biometric information)
- your immigration status and any conditions of your stay
- information about whether you have access to public funds, such as benefits and medical services
On the back of your BRP may be a National Insurance Number (NI).Not all BRPs have this number – it depends on factors such as the date of issue and your visa status.
You will need to apply for a NI number if all of the following conditions are met:
- It is not on your BRP.
- You no longer have him.
- you plan to work, apply for benefits, apply for a student loan or pay class 3 voluntary contributions to National Insurance
