Global Talent Visa FAQ

Do I need a lawyer or attorney to successfully apply for a Global Talent visa?

Do I need a lawyer or attorney to successfully apply for a Global Talent visa?

To apply for a Global Talent visa in the UK, there is no need to contact a lawyer or solicitor, unlike in the US. Here, you can try to put together a package of documents on your own, guided by the official data on the websites of the UK government and approving organizations. Or you can seek help from me, a talent visa holder, and save your time and avoid mistakes and stress.

Can I apply for citizenship after a certain period of stay on the Talent Visa?

Is it possible to apply for nationality after a certain period of stay in Global Talent? After your application is approved, you are entitled to submit documents to the University of Applied Sciences. For the Exceptional Talent category – after 3 years, for the Exceptional Promise category – after 5 years. After this period, after another year, you are entitled to submit documents for citizenship.

Can I bring family members with me if I get a Global Talent visa?

Yes, having a talent visa, you are entitled to take it with you. Family members in the UK include your spouse and children under the age of 18. They will have the same rights as you, including the right to work. It is worth noting that each family member you want to take with you will have to undergo a separate visa procedure and each will have to pay for compulsory health insurance separately.

Can an e-mail be used in recommendation letters?

For Recommendation letters for the Global Talent Visa Use special e-signature services such as PandaDoc or DocuSign.

What is the difference between Exceptional Talent and Exceptional Promise?

Exceptional Talent is for people who are already recognised leaders in their field. Exceptional Promise is for people who are clearly on the way there but have not arrived yet. It is the same visa with the same rights and the same £766 in fees; what differs is the evidence bar and how soon you can apply for settlement.

Exceptional Talent applicants usually have five or more years of senior work behind them and recognition that reaches well beyond their own employer: awards judged by peers, coverage in respected industry press, invitations to speak or judge, work that other people in the field cite or build on. The question an assessor is answering is whether your standing is already established.

Exceptional Promise applicants are earlier in the journey. You have developed actively in your field over the last five years, you have real achievements to point at, and the trajectory is upward, but the record is shorter and the recognition is more local. The question here is whether you are likely to become a leader.

The types of evidence are the same for both categories. It is the level, and the standing of the people and institutions behind it, that separates them, which you can see in the criteria for each route.

The practical consequence is settlement. Endorsed under Exceptional Talent, or through one of the qualifying prizes, you can apply for indefinite leave to remain after three years of continuous residence. Under Exceptional Promise it is five. Dependants need five years either way, so a three-year route to settlement for you does not shorten anything for your family.

Choose honestly. Applying under Talent with a Promise-level record is the most common avoidable refusal I see. Some endorsing bodies will endorse under Promise where a Talent application falls short of the higher bar, but that is not guaranteed and it varies by body, so check the current guidance for yours rather than treating it as a safety net. And once you are endorsed under Promise, your settlement timeline is five years; there is no upgrade partway through that shortens it, short of making a fresh application under Talent later, which restarts the process rather than accelerating it.

If you are genuinely on the line between the two, that is worth an hour of proper assessment. Start with the scoring tool to see where your evidence sits.

How much does a Global Talent visa cost?

It costs £766 to apply for the Global Talent visa. If you are applying based on an endorsement, you pay it in two parts: £561 when you apply for the endorsement and £205 when you apply for the visa itself. If you are applying as the winner of an eligible prestigious prize, you pay the full £766 when you apply for the visa.

These fees are not refunded if your application is refused.

The total cost then depends on the visa length — you choose between 1 and 5 years. If you are planning to settle in the UK (ILR) and apply for citizenship, choose the maximum 5 years.

You will also pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) — £1,035 per person per year, so £5,175 for a 5-year visa.

If your family is joining you, each family member pays the same £766 visa fee plus the IHS.

Depending on your country, you may also need a tuberculosis test from an approved clinic — roughly another $100.

In total, a 5-year visa costs around £6,000 per person. For an exact calculation for your situation, book a free consultation.
